Spinning in Mallorca: plan your first fishing day

A beautiful stretch of coast needs suitable access

Mallorca has rocky coves and sandy coastal stretches. For planning, this difference matters more than a photograph of turquoise water: you need casting room, secure footing and somewhere you can land a fish. A high rock ledge can look impressive in pictures and still be unsuitable for your first trip.

Especially in familiar coastal areas such as the Bay of Palma or around Migjorn, a map of marine protected areas is part of preparation. The authority publishes rules for each reserve. Do not search only for the resort name: check the actual stretch of shore and the method allowed there.

• Inspect access in daylight first.
• Keep your backpack and spare tackle above the wet shoreline.
• Plan a second, more accessible location in case the first proves unsuitable.

Limit your tackle to one fishing day

For conventional spinning, Mallorca operator Green Flake mentions rods around 2.40–2.70 metres long with a working range of roughly 20–50 grams. This is guidance for medium-sized lures, not compulsory equipment for every coastal spot. For very small lures, the operator explicitly describes lighter rockfishing tackle.

Our suggestion for your holiday bag: a rod suited to your planned lure size, reel, spare leader, a few reliable lures, pliers, line cutters and a tape measure. Check the printed casting weight before travelling. A heavy metal lure does not belong on a light rod simply because it fits in the lure box.

Three lure types make a manageable start

A shallow-running minnow, a soft shad and a compact metal lure provide different options. Above shallow, stony ground, start searching higher in the water. Letting a fast-sinking lure immediately fall to the bottom mainly increases the initial risk of snagging there.

With soft lures, rigging also matters: an exposed jig-head hook is better suited to relatively unobstructed areas; a properly rigged concealed hook point may reduce snagging. It does not make the lure snag-proof. Where and how deep you work it remain decisive.

• Test the action with a short cast into visible water first.
• Change retrieve speed or running depth before repeatedly switching colours.
• Check your leader for rough patches and damage after contact with rocks.

A simple sequence for the first hour

Begin by observing: where can you stand safely, how do the waves move, and where are the submerged rocks? For a first attempt, a manageable stretch is more useful than a supposed secret tip reached only by climbing. Also check wind and sea conditions in AEMET’s coastal forecast.

Start with a limited lure selection. Afterwards, note location, time, weather, lure and observations — even without a bite. On the next trip, change one thing deliberately. Several short outings then build your own picture of the area, instead of labelling a location bad after one unsuccessful evening.
